Help Your Customers Pull-Off the Popular Y2K Fashion Trend

Hello again, dear Trendsists. Are you and your customers loving the Y2K fashion trend? As I am sure many of you fellow members that were alive during the actual period that made up the early 90s and early 2000s, you were either excited, shocked, or maybe even a little unsettled. As someone who was hesitant about these styles coming back on-trend, it's starting to grow on me and creates nostalgia of a different time.
As we are all aware with fashion, what goes around, comes back around every couple of decades; and many times even better than before!
Y2K fashion was highly influenced by our favorite pop artists and the ever-growing technological advances, especially with the worldwide web. Many popular fashion icons of that time included the likes of Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Jessica Parker just to name a few.
Many TV shows of that time that embody Y2K fashion and presented iconic looks were Clueless (obviously), Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, and even The Simplelife starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
Already living through this era, I feel experienced enough to represent how to achieve Y2K by breaking down this trend into several different must-haves to complete this look. This is a great opportunity to upsell and make styling suggestions as many of these items can be styled in so many different ways to achieve many different outfits.

Halter Tops
Early 2000s style was all about the nice top and jeans look. Many pop icons, especially Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, were well-known for wearing a nice cropped top, with the popular low-rise jeans of that time. Although halter tops aren't exclusive to this decade, they were one of the popular styles of this time and were worn to concerts, to run errands, and even on the red carpet! People love them because they provide the perfect balance of sexy and classy.
Slogan Graphic Tees
We all know good graphic tees are a must-have that almost everyone already has in their closet and never really go out of style. Style during the Y2K era was all about making a statement, which is why slogan tees specifically were so popular. Who needs words when your shirt can speak for you?
Flared/Wide Leg Jeans
Although the early 2000s was best known for the popularity of low-rise bootcut jeans, wide-leg jeans and flared pants were also very popular at this time. These great styles add a modern-day touch to this Y2K jean trend and can easily be worn from day to day with a variety of different tops.
Cropped Cardigans
Cropped cardigans are yet another adorable item that many of us still love and have stuck around! The versatility of styling combined with the coziness of these cardigans is what has made the cropped cardigan a favorite in many people's wardrobes!! Cropped tops in general were a huge Y2K staple. Popular styles of cropped cardigans during this time included prints, bright colors, and/or ribbed material.
Plaid & Prints
When you first think of Y2K fashion at the pop influences of that time, what pops into your mind? You probably thought about Clueless or Mean Girls which were perfect representations of fashion during that time. Although Clueless came out in the mid 90s, Cher's style still influenced the early Y2K fashion trends from the late 90s. Vibrant colors and prints made up a large part of mainstream fashion, and two iconic prints you would see everywhere were plaid and argyle!
Cutout & Straps
Clothing with straps and cutouts recently made a comeback last year and with the Y2K trend still so popular, it doesn't look like these styles are going anywhere anytime soon. As you may have noticed, based on this list or memories of this time, many styles were designed to show more skin, and cutouts and strappy details are the perfect ways to do that. If you refer back to pictures of red carpets events from this time, you will be sure to find no shortage of these details.
Crochet Clothing
When you first think of crochet clothing, you probably think of the 70s. How does this relate to Y2K fashion? Because 70s fashion made a large resurgence during the Y2K era! We all know that with fashion, what goes around comes back around again, which is why you will notice many popular Y2K and 70s styles trending right now.
Whether you are a fan of the Y2K trends that have made a come-back or not, consumers are loving them!! By adding these to your store, you will be able to provide products with a high demand which will encourage more traffic to your store and make it easier for you to be discovered when people are shopping these specific styles online.
Until next time, Trendsists, and as always, keep it classy.
